Welcome to NIS

Information Communication Technology function is increasingly applied in the education environment. NIS Unit seeks to provide modern infrastructure and services that support and enhance research capacity of the university as a priority. The unit strives towards deploying befitting technologies to enable teachers, students and staff to access a wide range of services, learning tools and digital information resources, which support teaching, learning and school administration in a secure manner.

The Unit oversees the planning, designing, deploying and maintaining of network infrastructure in the University. Our Campus and inter campus fibre network spreads up to 75km with all major buildings connected and a metropolitan stretch that covers the entire Zaria community.  Wireless access is available on all our three campuses (Samaru, Shika and Kongo) and some student hostel areas and core academic areas for continuous access to digital resources.

The Units boasts of experienced Engineers and Technicians armed with diverse knowledge in standard network design, configuration and deployment using industry standard equipment and tools, that are responsive and result oriented in network planning, deployment, training and user support. Our regular participation in various capacity building programmes within and outside the University has continued to play a leading role in building more strength. Our quest for professional and well-trained staff compliment has since resulted in managing the optical fibre backbone, WLAN, LAN infrastructure and power supply entirely via in-house efforts.

Operational Structure

The Network Infrastructure Unit is divided into three core working groups as indicated in the figure below

NIS core working groups

Network Operations Group

Network availability in a qualitative and secure manner is our goal. This group is saddled with the most critical role of ensuring service quality by maintaining a robust and operational network at all times.

Network Provision and Maintenance Group

This group is responsible for fault clearance, WLAN, LAN, Metro Fibre and provision of cost estimates for new deployments..

Power supply plays a crucial role in ensuring network availability and efficient service delivery. Our power provision team ensures that stable electricity exists at all critical network sites by;

Network Support and Documentation

Being user centred in provision of our services, we are conscious that reaching out is key, thus the user support is at hand to receive queries and resolve issues. The duties of this section include;

Keeping abreast with our resource capacity is crucial both in service delivery and return on investment, we ensure that requisite information on the network is available as at when due. This section performs the following tasks;
